Cushion cut engagement rings come in a few different styles. The most popular, common and cheapest option is the solitaire. This simply means that there is only one diamond on the ring as opposed to say a 3 stone design. By choosing this option your entire ring depends on the one diamond you choose. This is both good and bad thing.
First the bad, the only really bad thing about buying a diamond cushion cut solitaire engagement ring is that it is not as unique and interesting as it could be. However, given that the cushion cut itself is not the most common one for engagement rings you are probably OK. The only other possible bad point is that a 3 stone design can hide some of the flaws with any one diamond. But this is only a minor consideration.
The pluses far outweigh the minuses. With a cushion cut solitaire ring you can focus all your money on getting one good quality diamond that really stands out. Moreover, it will obviously be less expensive, since you are only buying one stone instead of 3. So what else should you know before buying?
The same general advice for all diamond engagement rings applies to buying a cushion cut solitaire. You want to focus on clarity, color and carat given that you have already chosen cut. As always better quality rather than just a bigger stone looks better and should in principal be chosen. It all comes down to personal choice, but better quality rings tend to maintain their value more over time.
So what specifically should you be looking for in cushion cut diamond solitaire rings? First, in terms of clarity you want one with a good rating, VS2 at the absolute lowest and the higher the rating the better. The reason why clarity is so important with the cushion cut is because this cut is very open and any flaws will be glaringly obvious even to the untrained eye. So don't skimp on clarity.
The next consideration is color. This is slightly less important than clarity and again comes down more to personal choice. As you may or may not know diamonds are color graded from D to Z. D is colorless or white and Z is very yellow. D is the most expensive but if you don't mind a yellowish tinge you can choose something with a slightly lower rating if money is an issue.
Finally, you have carat. This is the biggest factor in terms of the price of a ring but not in terms of its quality. So, if I were you you I would find rings with the clarity and color ratings I like and then pick the largest ring I could afford in my price range. Most people do this the other way around and while they have a big rock, it doesn't look as nice as it could or really should.
