The cushion cut has been a popular choice for diamond rings for over a century. This type of cut is especially good for showing off a ring's clarity. So, if you opt for a cushion cut ring be sure that you buy one with a high clarity rating. Otherwise, the flaws will be extremely obvious.

Cushion cut rings are unique because the diamond is in the shape of a square or rectangle as opposed to the more common round cut. This means if you choose to buy a cushion cut engagement ring you'll be getting something that really stands out and sets you apart from everyone else.

However, that being said I should address any men reading this who are planning to buy a ring as a surprise for that special someone. Before you decided to buy any ring, make sure you get an idea of what style of diamond and ring she wants. Cushion cut rings are amazing, but not all women want this type of ring. Try to subtly find out what she wants first.

Once you have determined that she wants a cushion cut ring your next task is to determine the shape of the diamond. Basically your choices are either square or rectangle. Again, you will have to find out what type she prefers.

First, the size or carat of diamond will be the biggest determinate of cost. It goes without saying that larger diamonds cost more than smaller ones.

The second factor is color. For white diamonds the less color the better, but this also comes at a greater cost.

Finally, you have clarity. Again. The clearer the diamond the higher the price. However, keep in mind that cushion cut rings really show off clarity. So, if you are buying this type of ring it is better to buy a slightly smaller diamond with a higher clarity rating than a bigger one with a lower rating.

One other thing you have to figure out when buying an is the metal the ring itself will be made from. The most common choices are 14 or 18 carat white or yellow gold or platinum. Platinum is the most expensive option with white or yellow gold being about the same price for a given carat.
